Living Abroad and Stress

If you are travelling or living abroad, maybe for business or school, you are likely familiar with the ups and downs of living outside of your home culture and country. On one hand, it can be the experience of a lifetime–learning a foreign language, becoming comfortable with the cultural norms of the country, making new friends, and experiencing world events through the eyes of another nation. On the other hand, the very things are that exciting and rewarding can also be stressful-having limited fluency or understanding of the language, struggling with cultural norms, and in some countries, always being perceived as an outsider.

I have spoken with people who are in another country for business or school and sometimes just for travel. Being away from the comforts of home and friends and loved ones can be very challenging. Not having a local support system is also difficult.

If you are experiencing stress and are having trouble adjusting to life in a foreign country, it may be helpful to talk to a mental health professional. Video sessions are a great way to connect with a therapist back home or, in my case, in the United States who can help you through the adjustment.
